Summary: Low-code cloud workflow automation service integrating with Cosmos DB via connectors, triggers, and actions.

Overview

Azure Logic Apps is a cloud-based serverless workflow and orchestration service that enables building automated, low-code/no-code business processes and enterprise integrations. With the Azure Cosmos DB connector, Logic Apps provides managed triggers (such as 'When an item is created or modified (V2)', powered by the Cosmos DB change feed) and numerous actions (including create or update document, read document, query documents with SQL, and delete document). In the DP-420 exam, Logic Apps is contrasted with Azure Functions: choose Logic Apps for visual, declarative orchestration connecting Cosmos DB to SaaS platforms, Office 365, or multi-step enterprise workflows without writing custom code; choose Azure Functions when complex code transformations, high-throughput microservices, or custom business logic are required.

Example (Logic Apps Workflow Definition): Change Feed Trigger with Automated Action

        "Body": "Order @{triggerBody()?['id']} was placed for customer @{triggerBody()?['customerId']}."
      }
    }
  }
}

This workflow automatically triggers when items change in the Cosmos DB orders container and executes an Office 365 action to notify operations — achieving event-driven enterprise integration without maintaining custom server infrastructure or code.

DP-420 Style Practice Questions

Q1. When should you choose Azure Logic Apps over Azure Functions to integrate with Azure Cosmos DB?

  • A. When building low-code, visual workflow orchestrations and integrating with enterprise SaaS services like Salesforce or Office 365
  • B. When sub-millisecond custom compute and high-frequency algorithms are required
  • C. When you need to define custom composite indexing policies
  • D. When executing JavaScript stored procedures inside a logical partition

Q2. What enables Azure Logic Apps to trigger automated workflows based on new or updated documents in Cosmos DB?

  • A. The Azure Cosmos DB connector's change feed trigger ('When an item is created or modified')
  • B. Continuous backup point-in-time restore log polling
  • C. Cosmos DB Operator ARM role events exclusively
  • D. Diagnostic log ingestion into Log Analytics workspaces

Q3. Which capability is provided by the Azure Cosmos DB connector actions within Azure Logic Apps?

  • A. Reading, creating/updating, querying with SQL, and deleting documents within Cosmos DB containers
  • B. Provisioning physical partition hardware and rebalancing storage manually
  • C. Overriding the 20 GB logical partition storage limit
  • D. Running analytical queries without enabling Azure Synapse Link

Answer Key

Answers are listed at the very end so you can attempt the questions first.

  • Q1 (Azure Logic Apps): A. When building low-code, visual workflow orchestrations and integrating with enterprise SaaS services like Salesforce or Office 365 — Azure Logic Apps is designed for visual, declarative workflow orchestrations and out-of-the-box SaaS connectors, whereas Azure Functions is designed for custom code execution.
  • Q2 (Azure Logic Apps): A. The Azure Cosmos DB connector's change feed trigger ('When an item is created or modified') — The Cosmos DB connector in Logic Apps uses the change feed trigger to execute workflows whenever documents are created or updated.
  • Q3 (Azure Logic Apps): A. Reading, creating/updating, querying with SQL, and deleting documents within Cosmos DB containers — The connector provides actions for standard document operations (create, replace, read, query, delete) directly within a workflow step.
